The main alloy of molybdenum is TZM. The alloy contains at least 99.2%. Maximum 99.5% Mo, 0.50% Ti and 0.08% Zr with traces of C are used for carbide formation. TZM is twice as strong as pure molybdenum at temperatures in excess of 1300 degree . TZM has a recrystallization temperature about 250 degree higher than molybdenum and has better weldability.

The finer grain structure of TZM and the formation of TiC and ZrC in the molybdenum grain boundaries inhibit grain growth and parent metal related failures due to fracture along the grain boundaries. This also gives it better welding performance. TZM costs about 25% more than pure molybdenum, while processing costs are only about 5-10% higher. For high-strength applications such as rocket nozzles, furnace structural components and forging dies, the cost difference is well worth it.
